Artist of the Week: Frozen Lakes
Each week here at High Road, we choose one band or artist that we’re not working with, but we think you should check out anyway!
NAME? Frozen Lakes
LISTEN TO their single “Do the Shuffle” in the number one spot of our “Pop Perfection” Spotify playlist.
WHAT DO THEY SOUND LIKE? The newly-launched solo project from former Darling Waste frontman Lance Waste doesn’t bear much resemblance to his emo beginnings (aside from the occasional vocal inflection). It’s like modern pop with gloomy 80’s new romantic/goth pop lyrics over it. Check it out if you dig Bon Iver, Finneas, Melanie Martinez, BORNS.
WHAT’S THE STORY? “I was hospitalized and sent to emergency surgery,” says Waste. “Without going into too much detail, I was told there would be a 50/50 chance of me waking up and my life being VERY different. As soon as the Surgeon said that, she left the room and I was just sitting on a hospital bed, confronting my mortality alone. I just started sobbing. So the song is about trying to embrace death and enjoy the process a little bit. I’m an atheist so I dont think I’m going anywhere, but hopefully my consciousness moves on, or at death is restful. So I decided to write a little dance song about doing a shuffle into death.”
