Ohio metalcore act, Firmament, just dropped their sophomore LP “A New World If You Can Take It”. The album fuses modern metalcore, alternative rock, and progressive post-hardcore with themes of philosophy, mysticism, and personal loss. The alt-rock-tinged single “Beneddictional ft. Alex Hunter of Present” is currently streaming, and you can hear/watch it at the above link.

“”Beneddictional” is a portmanteau of “Benediction” (the prayer said towards the end of a religious service that bestows a blessing) and “Addiction”. The song is about the difficulty of wishing a lover well as you part ways, while recognizing that the relationship was not good for you. It’s the “poppiest” from the album, being simpler than most of the other songs and not as heavy. The video uses clips from David Lynch films and the show “Twin Peaks” that illustrate similar themes.” – Firmament

Firmament, the Ohio-based melodic metalcore/progressive rock duo of brothers Eric and Brandon Carbenia, has built their career on resilience, evolution, and introspection. Since forming in 2014, they’ve faced financial struggles, lineup changes, and personal hardships—each obstacle shaping their artistic identity. Their debut LP, Spirit of Place (2018), earned critical acclaim, drawing comparisons to Tool, The Contortionist, and Porcupine Tree while receiving global airplay. After a hiatus marked by relocation to Austin, Texas, and a deep dive into music production and spiritual exploration, the Carbenia brothers returned to Ohio in 2023, ready to craft their most ambitious work yet.

Set for release on May 2, 2025, their sophomore LP, A New World If You Can Take It, refines and expands Firmament’s signature sound. Self-produced and mastered by Kris Crummett and Jens Bogren, the album fuses modern metalcore, alternative rock, and progressive post-hardcore with themes of philosophy, mysticism, and personal loss. Cryptographic elements, experimental songwriting techniques, and collaborations with artists like Alex Hunter (Present) further enrich the record’s depth. While not a concept album, its sequencing and thematic cohesion explore time, transformation, and existential reckoning. From the mercurial post-hardcore energy of “Liquid Lush” to the crushing intensity of “After Me, The Flood” and the alt-rock-tinged “Beneddictional”, A New World If You Can Take It cements Firmament as a bold, boundary-pushing force in modern progressive music.
