Crash the Calm showcases the raw side of emo with latest single Rope

Today, New York’s Crash the Calm have released their latest single, Rope – an emotionally charged emo anthem that will bring you back to the foundation of emo and post-hardcore.

“Rope is the first new song the band is releasing since 2021. After two LPs and a Split EP, it’s also the first song the band is releasing with a new singer, James Cadolino. The video was filmed by James Morano who filmed the music videos for “No Deeper Than A Coffin” and “My Nowhere”. “Rope” is a song that Pat first brought to the table, and he had the whole song figured out structure wise – so it came together pretty easily as a group. While we were trying to find new singers in Brian’s absence, we would pitch people with this song to see what they could do over the instrumentals. We’ve heard a lot of interesting takes on singing over this song, but the first time we heard James’ version, we were sold. It was this song that brought us to what the band is now.” -Dan (Guitar)

“Rope was meant to convey the frantic struggle to feel fine. Like panicked breaths above water, contemplating on settling for a simple solution to an impossible and relentless darkness. Emotionally bobbing with remorse, relief, frustration, it comes in waves – strobing like a fever before being released into your bed, soaking wet with an ambiguous fate interpreted by your own personal mirror. The challenge for creating a visual was to try and depict these emotions without over implying. Stopping the metronome yet it’s incessant ticking continues to haunt you. Attempting to glue the head back on the Infant de Prague. Drinking what isn’t necessarily booze but a dark and viscous liquid, almost more akin to motor oil – implying a relationship to self destruction and impending disaster.” – James (Vocals)

Crash The Calm was formed in late 2014. After releasing their debut single “Holes” in 2015, which was produced by Phil Douglas of Iron Chic and Latterman, the band steadily performed and toured throughout the year before catching the eye of Long Island-based label Downport Records. The band began recording their debut full length, How’ve You Been?, at VuDu Studios with Mike Watts (Dear Hunter, Hail The Sun, O’Brother), Nick Starrantino (Pollyanna, The Republic of Wolves) and Dom Nastasi. How’ve You Been? was released in 2017 on Downport Records, featuring the singles “The Ambient Sound of Traffic” and “Irish Exit”.

Along with the release of the record, Alternative Press premiered a live recording of “Holes”, calling it “[a]n unadulterated effort in 21st century grunge (pulling from the likes of Balance and Composure and ambiance of Circa Survive)”. The band then released a 4 song split-EP with Long Island post-hardcore band Staleworth in 2018, also on Downport Records. The band entered the studio again in 2019 at Westfall Recordings (Johnny Booth, Moon Tooth, Dr Acula) with Anthony Lopardo and Ray Marte for their follow up release. In October 2020, they released the single “Devils” and announced the upcoming LP A Town Named Nowhere, an 11-song concept record which, in short, is about a town suffering from tragedy during the dust bowl era in the United States. Brooklyn Vegan premiered the music video for the lead single, ‘My Nowhere’ (directed by James Morano) in July 2021, calling it “…a cross between the heavier Manchester Orchestra songs and Balance and Composure.”

The band released “A Town Named Nowhere” in 3 volumes released over the span of 2021, featuring the singles “The Night That St. Catherine Fell” (video directed by Anthony Altamura) and “No Deeper Than A Coffin” (video directed by James Morano). The band also released an interactive video game where characters can experience the world of Nowhere through the music. After parting ways with their original vocalist, the band returned to the studio in 2023 with a new singer, this time self-recording and producing. Lifeless Sounds, an EP of 8 songs, draws influence from the band’s past releases while bringing new life to the band’s sound. The EP will be released January 2025, featuring the singles “Rope” and “Sleep on the Floor”, with videos directed by James Morano.
